John Meyer – A Former Federal Prosecutor Who Will Bring Integrity to the Office
John Meyer is uniquely qualified to serve as the U.S. Representative for the First District. John has practiced law for over 40 years, both as a federal prosecutor in Chicago and then as a private attorney specializing in complex litigation matters. John’s law firm has represented major corporations, substantial government entities (including the FDIC and the City of Chicago) and individuals in multifaceted civil and criminal cases. He has tried over 100 jury trials and argued more than 50 appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Further, he has successful negotiated settlements and resolutions in thousands of additional matters. John has earned a reputation as a principled and skilled lawyer. In many cases, he has emerged as a strong voice for the less fortunate individuals of our society. If elected, he will bring these collaborative skills to bear and will strive to achieve a consensus among his peers in congress in hopes of ending the gridlock that persists today. John will give priority to passing a budget that preserves essential government services while, at the same time, working towards responsible deficit reduction.
John will make it one of his primary goals to advance legislation that will help nurture American innovation and make the United States more competitive in the global market. He will create an agenda focused on job creation, leveling the playing field for clean-energy technology, expanding the impact of the research and development tax credit, and measures focused on helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
While we have witnessed a widening partisan divide in Washington, John is committed to finding solutions to the pressing issues facing Northwest Indiana. He has an agenda that will address these issues, including:
• Propose legislation to address trade imbalances and inequities created by manipulative devaluation of foreign currencies, particularly the Chinese Yuan Renminbi;
• Work toward a bipartisan solution to the budget crisis by proposing that congress reconsider the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform bill(often called Simpson-Bowles proposal) which was adopted by a Presidential Commission in 2010 and sought to identify “policies to improve the fiscal situation in the medium term and to achieve fiscal sustainability over the long run”;
• Utilize his experience as a former federal prosecutor to propose legislation that will help strengthen local, state, and federal public safety efforts;
• Will work to advance bipartisan bills that support job creation, the U.S. manufacturing sector, and entrepreneurship; and
Before seeking the First District seat in congress, John enjoyed a reputation as a highly accomplished trial and appellate lawyer. John is rated “AV” by Martindale-Hubbell (“AV–Preeminent–is a significant rating accomplishment a testament to the fact that a lawyer’s peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence”) and has been designated a 2015 “Super Lawyer.”
John is a graduate of Iowa State University. He earned a law degree from the University of Iowa Law School. He is a Porter County resident and lives in Ogden Dunes with his wife, Donna.
Lastly, John’s experience as a long-time farm owner and manager makes him superbly qualified to respond to the critical issues facing the farming community, including ethanol subsidies and price support programs.
